Apparently things are not as straight forward as they appear. Whilst  we felt we had a 3 month extension, (read letter below) on calling KEBS this morning they said it is not a blanket extension, and advised producers to go in and pay the fees and then negotiate with them on an extension.

Introduction

Pesticides are widely used in producing food. The term pesticide includes ingredients used in products, such as insecticides, fungicides, rodenticides, insect repellants, weed killers, anti-microbial, and swimming pool chemicals, which are designed to prevent, destroy, repel, or reduce pests. Pesticide introduction led to development of the Green Revolution that was and is characterized by intensive use of synthetic chemicals and use of high yielding varieties that are dependent on external synthetic inputs.

Below is a story carried in todays Nation. Please read it and let me know your views. What can we do as consumers?

I imagine this may be a good time to get a petition together to present to the Govt, Ministry of Agriculture and also the local media. If indeed GM products pose health risks, then imagine the scale of problem we could be faced with when we consider maize (maize meal) is our local staple.

KEBS sets deadline for quality mark PDF Print E-mail

The following article refers the Kenya Bureau of Standards (Kebs) mandatory implementation of the 'S' Mark. The 'S' Mark is to guarantee consumers the the poducts carrying the 'S' Mark have been tested by Kebs and meet the bureaus quality standards. Whilst recognising the need for such a service and a Mark we feel the costs to the producers is prohibitive and must be reviewed. We also feel the time frame for adherence must be extended to allow for a review of the costs.
